Peter gets mobile
Peter recently acquired a mobility scooter and, with assistance from Arthur and other supporters, has enjoyed exploring further afield every day.
Until Peter’s mobility scooter entered his life, Peter’s movements were limited by having to use a walker. He relies on facial expressions and hand movements to express himself, but Arthur was quick to realise that Peter was very interested in the mobility scooters he saw in a display window.
Peter and Arthur took a closer look, liked what they saw, and discussed the use of the scooters with the sales assistant. He suggested Peter try one out to discover how easy they were to use. A little daunted initially, Peter and Arthur took some time to think about the scooter, and how he could find it useful.
Peter decided to give it a go! With Arthur managing the controls, Peter could get used to moving so freely, and the sensation of air brushing past his face. Above all, the joy on Peter’s face told Arthur that this was a definitely a move in the right direction!
With the ConneXu Health and Safety Officer’s approval, and a little more practice for those assisting Peter in the use of the mobility scooter, Peter was able to give the scooter a longer trial. Despite outings being limited by wet weather, both Arthur and Peter felt positive about this new experience. They could tell that the scooter would make Peter’s daily outings more enjoyable, and take him further afield to experience new adventures.
And they were right. Arthur says, “This mobility scooter has opened a new chapter in Peter’s life, and given him the freedom to go places and do things. In a short time, despite the winter weather, he has been shopping, visited the RSA, and Hamilton Lake and tried several new cafés for lunch.”
Already Peter is more skilled at steering his scooter, and could eventually operate it himself. For now, someone walks with him, controlling the accelerator and offering Peter advice occasionally. Both Peter and his ConneXu supporters delight in the opportunities he can now enjoy, which he could never have achieved in his wheelchair, and which bring such pleasure.
With the advent of summer, Peter and his support crew will be exploring further afield and having even more fun with the scooter.
