Bethany - friendship, flatting & family

Bethany contracted meningitis when she was only a few hours old. This left her with left-sided hemiplegia, which significantly affects her memory, meaning she often can’t keep track of what she’s doing in her daily life.

Growing up Bethany needed constant support to keep her safe, but she was frustrated at home because she was like a cocooned butterfly. Her poor memory kept her from doing the things she wanted to do.

These frustrations really affected Bethany’s relationships within the family, particularly as she became a young adult and wanted more independence and a social life with friends.

Bethany now lives in a flat, has friends and is supported by ConneXu to do what she wants to do. Her ConneXu supporters are also helping her to build life skills so that she can continue to develop her independence, as well as her friendship circle.

The difference ConneXu has made to our family is that we can all breathe and enjoy our time together now

Creating a ConneX-Plan

Here are some of the elements in Bethany’s ConneX-Plan. As her vision of her unique, good life evolves, her ConneX-Plan will change to support her.

  • Live in a flat with flatmates and a supporter

  • 24/7 support

  • Improve frustration management skills

  • Transport to the activities and job she loves

  • Make new friends

  • Help her build skills to be more independent, such as cooking and budgeting
